I might have been on the wheel when this photo was taken.
Cadets from pre sea classes at the watt memorial college , Greenock were always used as helmsmen during builders trials ( in this case Scott's - if my memory is correct). Myself and Alan Newman were chosen for the Clan MacGillivray. We were onboard for two days , slept on top of the signal flags , and got 5 pounds for the job. Think I was on the wheel when she did the measured mile off Skelmorlie. Happy days . Will be seeing Alan next month at our reunion and will remind him. Thanks for the memory.

The best
My favourite - happy memories, Clan Lines best??? Only drawback was the damn generators - they might be able to build cars but they can't build a diesel sea going engine. See link for a photo in Manchester Ship canal which I posted a while ago.
http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/galler...hp?photo=52558 Biggest regret of my whole merchant navy career I didn't take enough photos, now I am nearly retired from another job I only wish I had a better record of the ports, ships etc. |

Was it Clan Macgillivray that had a plastic cover to the top rails of the engine room ladders? I seem to remember reading about one of the new Clan Line ships of that era in the Motor Ship. These plastic covers were not liked by the engineers as they could not slide down in the traditional manner and when the plastic became chipped they became a hazard

Yes it was. The problem was not only chipping of the plastic but there would be a build up of static electricity and you would get a shock when you next touch something after the hand rails. DC switchboard in an air conditioned control room!!! Must be a one and only. Brian |

Clan McGillevary
Anyone here remember an incident on this boat that happened in Immingham in '67 I think it was. I was on Salvesen's "Salvada" and we were tied up alongside the Clan McGillevary. Some of the Salvada's deck crew went aboard the Clan boat looking for booze and a fight started with the officers. Several of the Salvada's crew were arrested with 2 of them ultimately charged with attempted murder. I believe that the officer who was seriously hurt, lost his eyesight as a result of the attack. Anyone remember this?

I was 2nd Mate on this ship. If I remember rightly, the chart table was placed fore-and -aft, so that every time the ship rolled........everything slid off the chart table! Also, in fog, standing on the bridge wing, listening for fog signals, the gennies were so bloody loud, you couldn't hear anything else. Never mind, despite that, she was a good ship. I and my missus enjoyed her!

BTW, although I was deck crew, I had no part in the assault. 6 of the deck crew were replaced with Hull boys when we sailed, as the rest were jailed. Duke Drennan (Glasgow pool) |

I was an engineer cadet in Clan Macgillivray in 1973. Sailed in her again for most of 1977, as junior engineer and laterly 4th engineer, when she was banned from UK ports for previously carrying blue asbestos (running between the Medi & SA). To this day, that 8 month trip was/is the best time I have ever spent at sea - despite the Rolls Royce generators!!
