"FROM ROPNER, RUNCIMAN AND RADCLIFFE, THE GOOD LORD
PRESERVE US." was a seaman's prayer.... but they must have had some happy ships and visited many great places, albeit long trips? |

Sounds rather like an adaptation of "The Dalesman's Litany":
"From Hull and Halifax and Hell, Good Lord deliver us ...." (Sorry Marconi Sahib!). Brian |

Aye,I agree Brian, but it just shows how Folk songs were adapted and "travelled".

Sorry to be pedantic but it should be "From Hull, Hell and Halifax"

But if we are talking about a decreasing scale of awfulness I would go along with you and what is worse I have to go to the last place on your list on Monday. Brian |

Having never heard of that version I had to go with the original.
I first heard it as the title of a book by Chris Blanchett about 4 Group Bomber Command. They flew Handley Page Halifax bombers. Don't steal anything worth more than thirteen pence halfpenny then or you may get to sample the delights of the Gibbet. ![]() Kris |
