the following is an extract from the liverpool daily post and echo dated 29th october.
SHIPBUILDING COULD RETIRN TO THE MERSEY IF FORMER CAMMELL LAIRD SHIPYARD IN THE WIRRAL AND ITS NEW BUISNESS PARTNER SECURE A DEAL FOR ANOTHER MASSIVE MOD CONTRACT.
NORTHWEST SHIPREPAIRERS AND SHIPBUILDERS(NSL) HAS SIGNED AN ALLIANCE WITH ITALIAN SHIPBUILDING GIANT FINCANTIERI. WHICH IS BIDDING TO BUILD SIX SUPPLY VESSELS UNDER THE MODs MILITARY AFLOAT REACH SUSTAINABILITY(MARS) PROJECT.
THE ALLIANCE IS UP AGAINST THREE OTHER SHIPBUILDERS IN THE RACE TO BUILD THE VESSELS. IF SUCCESSFUL, TWO OF THE TANKERS COULD BE BUILT AT NSLs FORMER CAMMEL LAIRD YARD, POTENTIALLY CREATING HUNDREDS OF JOBS,,THE LAST COMPLETE SHIPS TO BE BUILT AT LAIRDS WERE THREE SUBMARINES IN THE EARLY 1990s.
AN EARLIER COMPANY CALLED CAMMELL LAIRD CALLED IN THE RECIEVERS IN 2001 AFTER A DISPUTE OVER A £50m contract to build a mid section for cruise liner costa classica.
BUT IN MAY 2005 NSL, LED BY FORMERCAMMEL LAIRD APPRENTICE JOHN SYVRET BOURGHT CONTROL OF THE YARD, AND THE NAME.
IN JUNE THE COMPANY WON A CONTRACT TO REFIT 11 RFA SHIPS WORTH £180 MILLION.
NSL MD MR SYVRET SAID HE WAS NOW HOPEFUL THAT NSL, AND FINCANTIERI COULD WIN ANOTHER MOD CONTRACT AND BRING MORE SHIPBUILDING TO THE MERSEY.
THE MOD ANNOUNCED IN MAY, THAT THE SHORTLISTED BIDDERS TO BUILD THE NEW RFA TANKER FLEET WERE FINCANTIERI, SPANISH FIRM NAVANTIA, KOREAN FIRM HYUNDAI AND KOREAN-BASED CONSORTIUM INCLUDING BAE SYSTEMS, DSL AND DSME.[=P]

I thought most of the yard and it's equipment had either been demolished or removed, so surely to re-establish a shipbuilding presence for only two ships would require a major investment in tools, equipment - not to mention having to train/retrain large numbers of people? The manpower side of things on it's own could force the MOD to ask some serious questions about quality assurance and delivery times, and may also hike up the cost for these ships greatly. Unless of course most of the ships are pre built in Italy, and then the bits sent round to Liverpool for assembly by a Local/Imported workforce.
I'm afraid that once Shipbuilding has gone, even for a few years it takes an iron will and a serious and sustained long term investment to reintroduce it.
