The Ballymoney had a sister ship also built in Lamonts of Port Glasgow. I was an apprentice with Aitchison Blair Ltd. of Clydebank who built and installed the triple expansion steam engines. During trials it was found that the ship didn't trim properly when in a ballast condition, she was down by the head. An additional aft peak was built over what shafting was on the ship. The Ballymena came out with this mod.

My grandfather was the engineer sent by Kellys to bring the Ballymoney back to Belfast My father remembers the delay because he was working in belfast docks and his father was late coming around black head as he was waitng for his dad and his new boat (ex kellys engineer's term) My grandfather was quite a senior engineer and my father recounts him being offered engineer on one of the new MV boats which he refused. My father still remembers other crews asking ,from the stern, if his dad was still flogging the Ballymoney up and down Belfast lough ,at one time my grandfather was over the kellys workshop. If anyone remembers William or Eric Hanna please let me know
