I too sailed on that mighty vessel and you certainly earned you pay on deck or engineroom. Was before the time you mentioned have not got my discharge book handy but think it was 1959/60.
One time we were loading in Liverpool for the coast and had to do a boiler inspection. Two of the boilers were condemned as they had (I hope our engineer members will correct me if I am wrong) Caustic embrittlement?. Had to off load the cargo and I was told to go home and wait till I was sent to the next ship. THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT FOUND TWO NEW ( SECOND HAND BOILERS IN A SCRAP YARD) Called the office (it was in Liverpool in them days). Did not know were I was but said now you can go back to Ashanti Palm. Had been hoping for one of the newer ships that did not have the steam pipes running outside the cabin and always had something going wrong. Last edited by lakercapt : 19th February 2009 at 22:29. Ashanti Palm
I was 8 years with Palm Line from 1963 3/0 & 2/O although not on Ashanti. With ref: to your note THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT FOUND TWO NEW ( SECOND HAND BOILERS IN A SCRAP YARD). I remember Shipping Super in Liverpool Captain Rankin obtaining a "new second-hand" lifeboat for Enugu Palm about 1964. They were indeed frugal times as I recall!
