SULACO, TILAPA, TURRIALBA, 1959/1962
I served aboard these Elders & Fyffe’s ships update some photos, can you recognize anyone. Also the model I was making of the Sulaco which was left onboard, if anyone can let me know what happen to the model when I left in Sept 1962,
Phyllis was the stewardess from Liverpool
Looking for chippy who was with me on all three ships, he was from Fareham, can’t find photo at the moment but will post later. Hope to hear soon. Bosun bill

Can you remember the name of the chippy?, I was a chippy on Sinaloa in 1961 and it's possible I may have known him as I come from the Fareham area.

thanks for reply no i can't remember his name but we sailed on the same ships above together. i have a photo of us together in a bar in Genova some where i will triy to find and put on. was you on the Sinloa with Phillys sister as stwardess. we came on board you in kinston one trip to see her.

Hi Bill, The stewardess was an older woman but can't rememember her name I was asst carp. No 1 was Wally Piper a Scouser who you may know, like a fool I thought the grass was greener elsewhere, I knew alot of M.N chippys from around here and if I can put a name to the photo I'll try to get in touch for you.

hi bill gday from australia,just had a look at the photo of the chippy and its definately john bartlett from fareham sailed with him on a few occasations.if i remember he had one brown eye,the other one blue.A good lad with a sense of humour and great to go ashore with in jamaica, first sailed with him on Camito. The "Sulaco" was the first ship I sailed on, joined her at Avonmouth, first night there was a hell of a noise and I looked in the companionway but was sent back to my room by the second engineer as the ship was on fire. A steam line had oil on it and it flashed. Chief engineer was John Smith, Captain was named Whitehouse I believe. Great way to spend a 21st birthday seperating two third engineers, a scouser and a scot from Glasgow they had a bottle fight. Some introduction to the merchant navy. I stood two watches with the chief fridge engineer, six hours on and six hours off. I was supposed to be paid more than my normal watches but I am still waiting. Sent to the "Camito" following two trips on the Sulaco, I think I deserved a medal for doing two trips on the Sulaco.
Everything we touched in the engine room broke off, the chief only comment wes, "What do you expect from a ship that was built in 1939" Happy days.

Howard,
Sulaca as Talamanca was actually built in 1932. You were unlucky to have been appointed to her. - Of the three S-Class Samala was reckoned to be the best of the trio Sinaloa was not too bad but Sulaco was considered a ship to be avoided if at all possible.
