Hen Frigates
"Hen Frigates - wives of merchant captains under sail" by Joan Druett -Souvenir Press 1998.
Recommended to anyone interested in daily life aboard sailing vessels in the 19th century. This lady has researched dozens of journals kept by women at sea ( mostly American), and there is some fascinating detail here. It's interesting that quite a lot of masters under sail took their wives and families to sea, but it seemed to die out with steamships. Maybe it was because more sailing ship captains had shares in their vessels? |
