"Facing the Congo" by Jeffrey Tayler
This is pushing the envelope a bit for a shipping forum, but it is a damn good read!
The author, an American, decided to try sailing about 1,000miles down the Congo River in a dugout canoe, in 1995 from Kisangani to Kinshasa. First of all he had to get to Kisangani, and, for me, the best part of the book is the description of the upstream journey on a cargo barge/pusher tug combo. Brilliant, descriptive, evocative writing - I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended to all that like good travel writing. Published in UK 2001 by Little, Brown & Co ISBN: 0 316 85789 0 |
