Very happy with my Nikon D200 which is in your price range on the S/H market, other smaller Nikons are available new at between 350 and 500 pounds. Have friends who use the Canon range - both manufacturers are well catered for with quality lenses both of their own manufacture and secondary market for what its worth I use both Nikon and Tokina lenses - again very happy with both.

I can recomend the Canon EOS 100D. I took advice from a friend. The camera isn't much different to the 450D but a good bit cheaper!

I've just been given a Sony "Cybershot", 12.1 Megapixels, with an 8GB card and a Lithium battery, bloody marvelous! It has a kevlar/carbonfibre carrying case. Not only that, it takes good photos too!
