BENGUELA - Encounter with a submarine
I attach a letter from the Company to the Master which refers to an encounter the BENGUELA had with an enemy submarine in 1917. Does anyone perhaps have more information on the event and perhaps a photo of the BENGUELA?

"Benguela" was attacked by "U58" (K/L Karl Scherb) off SW Ireland on 16.7.1917 during a ballast voyage Liverpool to Montreal. U-boat fired a torpedo which missed so then opened fire with its gun but was beaten off by return fire. Battle lasted from 1130 unril 1900, a record for an engagement between a merchantman and a German U-boat. U-boat so badly damaged it could not submerge and was taken in tow by an RN destroyer.
