Red face The Old Dog Finally to leave Portland

Gentleman, I have some sad news and some good news...After spending almost all of her working life here in Portland, The Ex Dog Tug (Beagle/Basset) and latterly Rufus Castle, has been sold to Tortola Barge Services in the British Virgin Islands. This sees her end her career as one of England's hardest working tugs. I will truly miss the old girl, and I will be watching her new career with intrest
The good news is that she will have a new lease of life instead of spending her days laid up and rusting away. Fair seas to you old Friend, and may you never strain and always be be treated with care, Love and respect. I will miss you! Andy

Did they cast an eye on the old Sandsfoot (Dalmation) as well Son?. Now that will bring a tear to Your eye. perhaps She will be next Uum!. But as You quite rightly say She will start a new life in the sun rather than simply die in the Port. I have spoken to Deon and he said He'd let me know when they sail as I would like to come down and see her off.

Hi Bob, Search the Tug Gallery for Dalmatian or Rufus Castle...I have already posted some. She was Built in 1962-63. An exemplary career indeed.

Dad, yes they had a look round the Sandsfoot (Ex Dalmatian), but we still need her in the port at the moment, so she will remain for the foreseeable future, But I am happy with that!

I'm glad to say that I have now managed to save all Her Old PAS/RMAS Deck Log-Books from that ERA but only as far back as 1987 up until March 1995. Holding many names of most of the employees during that time. The icing on the cake is amongst the pile was the very first Log-book of PAS Beagle/Basset on her acceptance from Hull back in 1963. Just to add that My son Andy has written a nice piece in our local magazine Free Portland News about the leaving of PAS/RMAS BEAGLE-BASSET/RUFUS CASTLE now TRIUMPH R for the warm Sunshine of the West Indies after 48 years at Portland.

Still not sure of her departure date, but it is imminant! Just a noteworthy point...How odd is this?.... Ex Basset now Re-named "Triumph-R"....Always worked in Portland...Get sold, and place of registration is now "Basse Terra"...Her old name still travells with her! BASSE Terra. What's the chances of that happening? Andy

Is she still slipped or otherwise. Would like to see picture of her with new name and be able to use in the next journal. Hope to be in Weymouth tomorrow. Cheers Tony.

Well folks, The old Basset has now gone...She slipped from Dock Jetty on Friday the 9th of December, and we escorted her out of the East Ship Channel aboard the Sandsfoot Castle (Ex Dalmation) We watched as she headed towards the Horizon. End of and Era, for Portland's longest serving Tug! Andy

On New Year's Day, The old Basset Reached her home port of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
Her Lister Blackstones purred like a kitten all the way, with no defects or any problems whatsoever. This is a testament to the Builders and crews of the tug for all these years. The new owners will certainly look after the tug, and It was a pleasure to meet them and their crews when they came to Portland to take ownership of her. End of an Era! A
