Coastal tankers armament
Two small coastal tankers designed for far east use were built by A.& J. Inglis in Glasgow in 1945, the Empire Campden and Empire Grosvenor. They had accommodation for DEMS gunners and mounted three guns, two on fore deck and one on the poop, can anyone confirm what type of guns these were please.
The first was bought by Everard and renamed Anonity. |

Hello Jim,
A happy New Year for you and yours... As they were mounted they were probably oerlikons? Very doubtful to be Bofors on a coaster - I may be wrong. My pal Alick Sangster was a DEMS gunner and one of his ships was Kelly's Donaghadee....He was the only DEMS on her and her armaments were one Oerlikon - one Lewis fired from the shoulder and one rifle.. I was in a coastal sailing barge at start of the war and we were given a Ross rifle (1914 vintage) it was for destroying floating mines if we saw any.. Regards, Stan |

Many thanks Geordie, from what I can see on a trials photo in shipping magazine it looks like a single barrel, altough shrouded in canvas cover.
