Monkton Combe

Hi, I'm looking to find a photo and info of the Monkton Combe, I assume she was a SS but not sure and she belonged to the Ald Shipping Co. around the '50's.

Thank you

Regards
Mike

Monkton Combe.....

Hi Mike,Just to expand a bit on Ted's post:-

M.V. MONKTON COMBE (O.N. 169082) was launched as EMPIRE LAIRD 7/43.motor vessel of 313 grt. Built by Richard Dunston of Thorne.

Renamed MONKTON COMBE when in the fleet of Ald(A.L.Duggan),Sg.Co,Bristol from 1947-1950.
Renamed HALRONELL when owned by JamesTyrrell of Dublin from 1950 onwards.
Wrecked 22.10.61 Black Rock, off Carnsore Pt. whilst on passage from Newport-Haulbowline with steel sheets.

The next MONKTON COMBE (O.N. 180989)was in the same company( Ald, of Bristol )but later-,from 1950-1958,after the vessel above had been sold to Ireland.

Unlike the above vessel she was a larger steam coaster of 1,052 grt, having been built as EMPIRE KEW in 5/45 by John Lewis of Aberdeen.
From 47-50 she was named BELTINGE with Constants(South Wales),before becoming MONKTON COMBE with Ald Shipping.
In 1958 she was sold to the Italians, registered first at Genoa, then at Bari, for 20 years before foundering 56nm SW of Cape Misenio on 3/12/78.

Found one photo(here in SN Gallery) of the ex-Empire Kew vessel.

Just for interest, Ald Shipping Co had another 'Monkton Combe' before the two mentioned above (before the period Mike is interested in).
Details and pictures of her at http://www.gooleships.co.uk/goolesb/glynconwy.htm

Dennis.
