Coast Guard find captain negligent in ship run aground

An investigation by the U-S Coast Guard says negligence by the captain caused a cargo ship to run aground near Barbers Point Harbor last year.

The 555-foot Cape Flattery hit a reef on February Second, 2005. The ship was moved eight days later after the removal of 128,000 gallons of fuel and about 9,000 tons of granulated cement.

Significant amounts of the ship's cargo -- granular cement -- were spilled onto the reef in the process.

Marine scientists say the damage to the reef could be the most severe for a grounding in Hawaii history.

The Coast Guard's report released last month listed the captain's mistakes including failing to wait for a local harbor pilot to guide the ship into port and not responding to the pilot's radioed commands to change course.
