SA ORANJE ex PRETORIA CASTLE
She,along with TRANSVAAL CASTLE were transferred to Safmarine in 1966.
The first shot was taken in September 1975 from CANBERRA in the Bay of Biscay as SA ORANJE passed en route to Southampton on her last inbound voyage from Cape Town. The second shot was taken about a week later also from CANBERRA/S deck in Southampton showing her loading cargo only for her last voyage. Also in shot are CLANS ROBERTSON and ROSS which I think had just been sold and were waiting their new owners. They were Union Castle vessels although, having said that, owners and managers were complicated!! |

Couldn't have been long after this that I took a photo of the three "Clans" in the thread "Three Sisters" in the Clan Line catagory.

SA Oranje
Interesting shot of SA Oranje at S/hampton prior to her final voyage. She actually carried both passengers and cargo for her final South-bound voyage, terminating at Durban on 6 Oct 1975. After destoring she left for Kaohsiung on 11 Oct. Edinburgh Castle carried cargo only on her final South-bound voyage in April/May 1976. The reefers were obviously laid up during the fruit "off-season", and carried on as Clans before being renamed and painted in U-C livery late '76.

I have just put a photograph of S.A. ORANJE in the gallery. I took it in 1965 from the TRANSVAAL CASTLE. We were sailing south to be renamed S.A. VAAL and the S.A. ORANJE had just been changed from PRETORIA CASTLE a couple of weeks earlier. The photograph was taken on a normal lens which shows how close the north & southbound mailships used to pass each other.

Clan Robertson & Clan Ross
Clan Robertson
Built 1965 by Greenock Dockyard of course! but placed under Union Castle management. In 1976 was transferred to Union Castle ownership and renamed Balmoral Castle - Europe / Africa service. In 1979 she was renamed Balmoral Universal. 1982 sold to Greek owners as Psara Reefer. 1984 scrapped. Clan Ross Built 1966 but placed under Houston Line management. To Union Castle in 1976 as Kilpurnie Castle. Became Kilpurnie Universal in 1979. Sold to Greeks as Syros Reefer in 1982 and scrapped in 1984. The other ships in the quartet were Clan Ranald, which became Dover Castle / Universal and the Clan Ramsay which became Winchester Castle / Universal. Fred |

I have recently purchased the dinner bell from the Pretoria Castle, I would like to hear from anyone who remembers or used this bell whilst serving on this

When we emigrated out to South Africa, Cape Town in late 1969, we sailed on the S.A. Oranje from Southampton.
I remember the trip with lots of happiness. 14 days I think it took. Gra. |
