i joined the ottinge in barrow, jan.1954. paid off 17 mar.1954(thankfully) in port talbot,the old man gave us a pound sub. to get something to eat. i can't remember much about her though,she was an old coal burner with an assorted crew,and i think we ran down the meddy,and also ran out of water and ciggies,bridge equipment was almost non existant,i seem to remember a wind up echosounder.anyone ever come across such an instrument??

Port Cities Hartlepool, very interesting site I was able to get info from that on another vessel called Empire Sunbeam which was also built at Hartlepool,thanks for that Gdynia.

Dear Clive,

Just saw your info posted in 2006 asking for information about the Ottinge. I do have a fair bit of info as my grandfather was Captain of this tramp steamer during the 2nd World War. Info about involvement in disastorous Atlantic convoy out of Liverpool. Spanish Civil war (damaged by Franco's planes in Valencia harbour). Rescue of German crew of Panamaian tanker off the Canadian coast in 1953.
Before imparting with more detailed info and copies of newspaper accounts etc, I would like some more information as to what exactly is your interest in this ship?

The ship that was bombed in Valencia was not the Ottinge. This was his previous ship. Sorry.

I am doing some research into my partners family and it seems his father sailed on the SS OTTINGE in 1930. I think she was registered in London and sailed out of Cardiff. Do you have any information on what happened to her or a photo?

My Grandfather served on the Ottinge (167799) as 1st Engineer from 13 March
1940 to 17 July 1950 when he retired. Does anyone have a Photo of the ship
