Cotswold Prince
COTSWOLD PRINCE arrived in Napier, NZ on 23 April 1979 from Manchester as FIJIAN. She traded under this name from Onehunga to Suva & Lautoka.
In December 1981, she was renamed ONEHUNGA and entered the New Zealand coastal trade. Withdrawn in December 1982 and after survey was renamed FIJIAN and re-entered the Onehunga - Fiji trade. In 1989 she was renamed COTSWOLD PRINCE. Laid up in Nelson in March 1992 badly rusted and decks considerably worn. Sold to L.D. Marine & Ship Repairs, Launceston, Tasmania and sailed from Nelson 22 January 1993 having been granted a single voyage permit due to her extremely poor condition. Some work was undertaken on her after her arrival in Launceston, but when I saw her in 1996 it was evident that none had been done for some time. (See photos above). In her later years at Launceston, she was moved around a bit from wharf to wharf and eventually to an anchorage in the Tamar River. Sold 2004 to (reportedly) Indian breakers at Mumbai. Sailed from the Tamar River on 21 July 2004 bound for India, calling at Albany (WA) for fuel and supplies. Arrived Albany on 9 August 2004 for engine repairs expected to keep her there for approx. 2 weeks. She was still there on 13 September when she moved from her berth to an outer anchorage. She just doesn't want to go to the breakers............ More photos of her at Launceston and as FIJIAN and ONEHUNGA are available if anyone wants to see them. Can anyone tell me anything of her career whilst under Prince Line ownership? |

Joined her as the Onehunga on the 22 1 82 paid off on the 22 9 82 . A hell of a few months up and down the N.Z coast allways remember the c/o had not been to sea for twenty odd years ,had been a school teacher, not a thing worked on her from lifeboats to the engines, when she whent back to the Fijian ,thay crossed the bar at Onehunga , and lost a man, left the engine room fiddle open on the poop.

Cannot get your link to work but try this one which I took when I was 2/0 on her in 1974:- http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/galler...rm/y/mcats/510 PS. You must have joined just after I paid off? We had Capt P. Campbell in command - a somewhat unpredictable character.

I have just read your entry on ships nostalgia. I remember the "Cotswold Prince" when she used to enter the Millwall docks in London back in the 70's. I never sailed on the vessel but I was the agent at the time. I boarded all the Prince Line vessels every trip in London and I remember Captain Brian Walmsley, as you say a Gentlemen and a very fine Master. I must admit that it was always a pleasure to board the Prince Line fleet. there were four ships of the class. "Cotswold Prince" "Cheviot Prince" "Malvern Prince" and the "Mendip Prince" All the same design. The other masters that you may recall are Captain Pat Campbell and Captain Michael Clark but may be they sailed on other Prince line vessels. There was also the container vessel ' Sailor Prince ' she used to call at the Victoria Deepwater Terminal Greenwich. the master was Captain Edward (Ted) Buckle and her regular voyage was out to Haifa and Ashdod. |
