German shipping companies and their identification

In 1960 Esso released a brochure " Deutsche Reedereien und ihre Erkennungszeichen, mit internationalen Handels- und Signalflaggen" (German shipping companies and their identification, with international merchant- and signal flags). In this publication all German merchant ships are listed and it is a very useful tool in German ships research. A copy may be downloaded from my website at http://www.geneaal.nl/maritime/deutsche_reedereien.pdf

A bit off topic but after sixty years I am still looking for information on the pre- war fleet of Hamburg South America Line, their ships, company history, etc. I do not read German but could probably get help with translation if needed

Try this address, I worked for them through a British agent and found them very friendly, so they should help you out, it is in English or German so no problem

Tony,

Many thanks. I have just shot off a request to their general email address. I shall let you know what results I get. My particular question was been hanging unanswered for 57 years so I can be patient a little longer!

Morning Nick, the World Ship Society produced a history of the company and their ships in 1989. ISBN 0 905617 50 9.

Thanks. in the meantime Hamburg Sud Amerika have sent me a 1945? photo of the ship taken possibly in Hamburg. Sadly there are a lot of dock buildings in the background and it is hard to see where they end the ship's superstructure begins, but still good to have after a 57 year wait!

Where can one find a list of companies, and their ships, that were registered in Königsberg and/or Pillau, pre-1945?

I hope this works.

Thank you for that. Unfortunately it deals only with those companies
within the post-war boundaries. However, much appreciated.

I know an activist with one of the Hamburg companies who is also member of WSS who might be able to help you if you are looking for something earlier. PM me and I will ask him if he can help.
