Hi All,
I am looking for some information on my Grandfather who was an engineering on the Talthybius around 1939.
I have a passenger list from Seattle in 1939.

His name was Karl Mahringer Born 12th May 1913 in Vienna, Austria
He moved to Liverpool and was Naturalized in 1938.

An help in find out where he sailed to and from or of how i can access that information would be much appreciated.

Andy,

On behalf of the SN Moderators, a warm welcome aboard from the Isle of Anglesey.
You will thoroughly enjoy the SN experience and hopefully someone will be able to help with your query - in the meantime, feel free to have a good look around. (Thumb)

s.s. Talthybius was trapped in Singapore when the Japanese onslaught began 1941/42.
Might your grandfather been in her at that time?

Quite possible, he did tell stories of being on a ship during the war period.
Any way i can track down the crew list while on that voyage.

My advice would be to check for a CRS10 for him first as per your other thread: https://www.shipsnostalgia.comshowthread.php?t=147682

If it has survived it will tell you which ships he served in and what voyages in that year he undertook then you could get the crew agreements knowing when he actually served in the ship otherwise you will be shelling out money looking/guessing.

Anyway the crew agreements for TALTHYBIUS official number, 131411, for the year 1939 is held at Kew in piece BT 381/62 (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11025824)
1940 - BT 381/615 (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11026377)
1941 - BT 381/1288 (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11043679)
She was bombed and abandoned in February 1942 and taken by the Japs so no crew agreement unless it is in with 1941.

Hugh
