On Shore and Afloat - Volume 1 - No. 4 31 December 1968

Capt. LH King retires. Served his Apprenticeship with Hall Line and commenced service as 3rd Officer on City of Wellington in 1928 and became Master of City of Christiania in 1955. His last command was City of Brooklyn.

Capt. RK Walker retires. Served his Apprenticeship with Hall Line and commenced service as 3rd Officer on City of Osaka in 1927. He was on City of Bombay when she was sunk in 1942. Promoted to Master in 1954 and his last permanent command was City of Glasgow.

Mr. GRE Dunn, Chief Engineer of City of Karachi retires due to ill health. He joined the Company in 1937. Whilst serving as 3rd Engineer on City of Manila during WW2 the vessel was hit by a torpedo in the Bay of Biscay. He re-joined the vessel to see if she could proceed under her own steam but she was hit by a second torpedo and sank.

Mr. WH Venables, Chief Engineer of E&P retires. He joined the Company in 1928. He was on Assyrian as 2nd Engineer when she was torpedoed in WW2. He was the last survivor to escape the Patrician when she sank quickly after a collision in the Straits of Gibraltar in 1963.

Mr. AJ Chafer died on 10 Sep 1968. He joined E&P in 1915. He retired as Chief Engineer in 1963.

Capt. GA Ring died on 11 Sep 1968. He joined E&B as 3rd Officer in 1913. His first command was Koranna in 1924. He retired in 1956.

Mr. JF Walker died 03 Nov 1968. He joined Hall Line as Junior Engineer in 1929 and served as Chief Engineer until his retirement in 1961.
