On Shore and Afloat – Volume 1 - No. 5 – 31 March 1969

Mr. Hector Shannon was Chief Engineer to City of Durban whilst she was building at Vickers.

Capt. CBP Bradbury who recently retired.

Capt. AW Field retires. He joined Hall Line as an Apprentice on City of Durban (I) in 1921. For many years he served as relieving Chief Officer for the 4 passenger vessels on the home coast and from May 1964 as relieving Master.

Commodore TM Williams, RD, RNR (Rtd.) retires. He served his Apprenticeship with Hall Line and served as 3rd Officer on Stanley Hall in 1926. After his wartime service with the RNR he re-joined the Company and was promoted to Master of City of Glasgow in 1951. While Master of City of Durban he was appointed Commodore in 1968.

Mr. JL Dahl retires. He entered service with Hall Line in 1928 and was promoted to Chief Engineer in 1946. His last vessel was City of Winchester.

Mr. JA Cucksey retires. He commenced service with Hall Line in 1929 and was promoted to Chief Officer in 1953.

Mr. James White retires. He entered service with E&B in 1933. He was Purser of City of Port Elizabeth on her maiden voyage. His last vessel was City of York.

Capt. DA Stokes, OBE, retires. He joined Wilson Line as a Cadet in 1921. His last command as Senior Master of Ellerman’s Wilson Line Fleet was Spero.

Mr. L. Whieldon died at home in Wallasey whilst on leave from City of Singapore on 08 Jan 1969.

Mr. E. Marsh, OBE, died on 19 Feb 1969 aged 78. He had been Chief Engineer with Ellerman’s Wilson Line retiring in 1955 after 44 years of service.

Thomas W. Hewitt died at his home in Guernsey on 10 Mar 1969 aged 61. As QM/AB he served on many of the fleet’s vessels. His first vessel being Kabinga. He was repatriated from City of Brisbane when in Australia in February 1969.
