On Shore and Afloat - Volume 1 - No. 8 – 31 December 1969

City of Exeter (City Line) struck a mine in June 1917. She was badly damaged but Capt. Rae and his Crew managed to save the ship and cargo, and took her into port without the loss of a single life. Capt. James Rae was awarded Lloyd’s Silver Medal for meritorious service, and after the Armistice was knighted as one of the most outstanding figures in the Merchant Service.

Capt. JBW Daly, Marine Superintendent of City Line retired on 31 Oct 1969. He joined E&B in 1919 as an Apprentice on Barotse. He was promoted Master on City of Derby in 1949 and subsequently relief Marine Superintendent in both Calcutta and Bombay.

Capt. GS Francis who joined E&B in 1939 as 3rd Officer. His first command was Pandorian in 1957. He retired as Master of City of Glasgow on 30 Sep 1969.

Mr. J. Corsar died at home on 07 Sep 1969. He was 2nd Refrigeration Engineer and his last appointment was City of Melbourne.

Mr. AM Duckett died 11 Nov 1969. He joined E&B in 1939 as 3rd Engineer. He retired as Chief Engineer of City of Portsmouth in 1959.
