City of Glasgow was renamed C/o Ottawa on 21 June 1971
City of Sydney was renamed C/o Montreal (Capt. DB Williams) on 26 July 1971
City of Eastbourne was renamed C/o Toronto (Capt. RH Bellhouse) on 23 August 1971

Capt. Tyrrell was Master of City of York on her final voyage.

Capt. LH King died on 18 June 1971 aged 65. He joined Hall Line in 1924. His first command was City of Christiania in 1955. He was Master of City of Brooklyn when he retired in 1968.

J. Martin was found dead in Duncan Dock, Cape Town after being missing from City of Dundee from 01 July 1971. He joined Hall Line in 1951 and was promoted to Chief Officer in 1956.

Mr. Angus Morrison died by drowning at Calcutta on 03 July 1971 whilst serving as Carpenter on City of Karachi.

Mr. David H. Smith died at home on 23 May 1971 aged 81. He retired as Chief Engineer of City of Dieppe in 1954.

Capt. EA “Tubby” Chapman, OBE died in Sydney on 21 July 1971. Born in 1904; he joined E&B in 1925. His first command was Fort Constantine in 1946. He retired as Area Superintendent, Australia in 1968.

Mr. R. Binfield, BEM, died on 01 August 1971. He joined W&L sea staff as a Steward in 1919. He was transferred to Papayanni Line during the war when he was awarded the BEM. He retired as Chief Steward in 1958.

Capt. H. Whitfield, OBE, died on 08 May 1971. He joined Ellerman’s Wilson Line in 1925 and was promoted to Master in 1943. He retired in 1968.

Mr. GB Stevenson died on 19 June 1971. He retired as Chief Engineer of City of Birkenhead in 1959.

Capt. JS Grant died suddenly in Sydney on 17 September 1971 whilst in command of City of Sydney. He joined City Line as an Apprentice and was appointed 4/O of City of Exeter in 1942. His first command was City of Dundee in 1962.

Capt. R. Clark has retired in 1971. He joined Hall Line in 1938. He was promoted to Master in 1961. His last command was City of Worcester.

Capt. GE Greenhow retired in 1971. He joined Hall Line in 1930. He was promoted to Master of City of Cardiff in 1958. His last command was City of Port Elizabeth.

Capt. BT Wortley has retired in 1971. He joined Wilson Line in 1932. He was transferred to City Line in 1937 as 3/O on City of Hong Kong. He was promoted to Master in 1957 and commanded the Cadet Training Ship, City of Lucknow. His last command was City of Durban. He was promoted to Captain in the RNR in 1960.

Mr. TF Garside has retired in 1971. He joined E&B in 1953. His last appointment was as Purser of City of Exeter.

Mr. CF Hughes has retired in 1971. He joined City of Exeter as Plumber on her first voyage and served his entire sea service on the one vessel.

Capt. RW Tyrrell retired in 1971. He joined Hall Line in 1928. He was promoted to Master of City of Ely in 1957. His last command was City of York.

Commodore R. Steel retired in 1971. He served his apprenticeship with Hall Line. His first command was City of Dundee in 1956. He was promoted to Commodore in 1970. His last command was City of Exeter.
