Built as Salerno - the fifth ship to bear this name.
She was the first of the “S” class
Salerno entered service in December 1965 under the command of Capt. GG Needham, then aged 43. She could take on board general and containerised or palletised cargo as well as refrigerated containers. There were side loading doors, both port and starboard, for driving cargo straight into the tween decks. A bow thruster facilitated berthing. The 17 Officers and crew were all provided with single berth cabins
As an economy Mirrlees built 9 identical interchangeable engines for this class and Spero
She served on the Scandinavian then Mediterannean trades
15 December 1969 broke through the inner dock gate at A/S Horten Verft, Horten when the engine failed to go astern and caused heavy damage to the stern of a vessel under construction in the drydock, to the tug, Bebe and to the Salerno’s bows. The total cost of the damage was over two million Norwegian Krone
April 1970 damaged her rudder when she struck rocks in the Stockholm Archipelago

I remember that incident well. There were a couple of miracles associated with it; 1) No one was killed. There had been a load of guys working the dock bottom not long before it happened. 2) The bottom damage to the ship was remarkably small ... considering! I think she continued in service for a while with a very rippled bottom before it was eventually repaired in Antwerp.
