First of 2 cable ships for Cable and Wireless built on the Tyne by Swan Hunter at Wallsend 1984.These shots show her building and fitting out.Believe their present day colours are not so attractive.

Very good Fairfield.
I supervised this vessel in drydock in Devonport (Auckland) several times and she has been stationed in Auckland for yeares.
Hereby some photos which I took in 2003 at her regular berth.
Next time I will post some photos of the vessel in drydock.

The colours today are actually quite attractive for this sort of ship as you may notice.
The red colour as in your first picture whilst under construction is a shop primer (a newbuilding primer) which is a very thin coat of holding paint (15 microns two pack epoxy).

Hereby some photos of this vessel during her drydocking in May 2004.
The dockyard is Devonport, Auckland NZ and all photos are copyright by jdej.
These 3 photos you 'll see the vessel just arrived in the drydock and high pressure waterwashing started.

I have to post 3 times in order to get to 9 pictures.

Great series of pictures Jan. Have had the luck to board her a couple of times in Sydney in my OTC days, nice vessel but then most of the C&W ships were pretty good to say the least.

I also sailed on the Mercury when she was first commissioned - joined her in the dockyard at Birkenhead, and sailed on her for the next two years as 3rd. engr.and had some great times aboard her!
