Hello to all from Vigo, a harbour in Northwestern Spain.
Im a seaman that spent several years at sea as apprentice, deck officer and captain in merchant navy and deep sea fishing vessels (factory trawlers).
Now, in my forties, still working with and for vessels but from ashore.
Full ahead,
Toro XJ

Toro XJ; Your quayside fenders in Vigo nearly sunk us about 45 years ago. I have written about this incident on this site before but for your erudition it will bear repeating.
You will probably know that the fenders alongside the quays in Vigo are made of thick logs of timber with old car tyres threaded on them. Similar to those in use all over the world, as they make excellent fenders and do a good job. However they have a major draw back especially where there is a large rise and fall in those ports open to the sea and the tides as Vigo is. As they are held in place close to the quaywall by chains attatched to rings on the top of the wall they need to be kept at the right length as the tide alters. Too short and they can`t float on the water as they should. Too long and they float about all over the show sometimes several feet from the quaywall. Well one day when we called into Vigo someone wasn`t doing his job and the chains were too slack. The fender ended up with one end jammed into one of our stormvalves and the other end jammed in a hole in the wall. As the ship came alongside, with such a weight something had to give. It was our stormvalve and we had a jet of water shooting into the engine room. We had to hurriedly heel the ship over by pumping water and oil over to the opposite side and list the ship enough to get the hole clear of the water . We then had to have an emergency patch welded over the hole till we got back to UK.
