Hi there.

Welcome to the forum. Try searching for his RN service record here:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=15&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

There are over 600 men with surname BALL, so you will need to search on first name and last name, then look through the results and narrow it down using place and date of birth, if known. RN service records can be downloaded for GBP3.50. It should provide a list of dates and ships served on and some other details.

regards,
Martin

Oops! Read that too quickly - just noticed the dates. The index I provided the link for is only for ratings who joined the RN between 1873 and 1923. If your friend's father joined after this, you need to look at section 4, "Men entering after 1923", in the National Archives research guide for "Royal Navy: Ratings' Service Records 1667-1923 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=39)".
