Hi, After 2 years on school ship HMS Conway in Merchant Navy 1954-61 ,last ship Blyth Adventurer, Moller Line on charter with Shell.
Apprentice with FC Stricks.
Most memorable trip was on Woldingham Hill,Counties Ship Management in 1959(see photos of Hill ships laid up at Dartmouth in Gallery) Did season on Geat Lakes when St Lawrence Seaway was first opened transporting grain from Duluth to Montreal.Saw Royal Yacht come past our berth on way to opening.
Then contracted to take stores to Duline early warning station on Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island.and had to rent a radar set for the trip!
En Route we got stuck fast in the ice at the entrance to the Bay and our propellor tips became bent and fouled the stern post and we managed to trim the ship ,rig staging and cut the bent tips off the propellor with polar bears looking on! eventually had to get the ice breaker Montcalm to get us out.
