My great great grandfather wrote an autobiography in 1897, An Old Soldiers Memories'. On September 7 1852 his regiment sailed from Madras to Burma on HMS Sphinx accompanied by the Mozuffer towing the SS Graham. The officers slept on deck in what sounds like grim conditions but the mosquitoes were the problem. So much so that Arnold Ward of Ours proposed that the most recent recruit should be tied naked in the rigging to attract the mosquitoes. The captain decided this was not the best solution !
