Hi, Joey :

If you would like a photograph of HMS Armada please PM me an e-mail address and I will get it off to you. She was one of the first group of sixteen ships of the 'Battle' Class built for the RN during WWII, and the lead vessel of that group, built on the Tyne by Hawthorn Leslie. Although laid down in 1942 and launched in 1943, she was not commissioned into service until July 1945, therefore played no active role in WWII.

Her 50,000 SHP geared turbines driving twin screws gave her a speed of just under 36 knots and she carried a complement of over 300 men. She went for breaking in 1965 at Inverkeithing, here in Scotland. Pennant No. D14.

The other vessel you mentioned, HMS Forth, was a submarine depot ship built in 1939 - Pennant No. A187. This one was built at the John Brown shipyard in Clydebank on the River Clyde. During the 1950s she was based in Malta G.C. and was moored in the Msida Creek. She departed Malta during 1960. In 1968 this vessel carried the first hovercraft to Australia. She went for breaking, as HMS Defiance, in 1985.

Best Regards,

K urgess

Welcome to the site. There is something I think you should be aware off - there is a book covering the history of the Battle class destroyers. Recently published, but can't remember who wrote it as my copy is at home. The same group have also done other classes.

Great book - Battle Class Destroyers by Patrick Boniface, published by Maritime Books in 2007.
I was on HMS Trafalgar from Nov 59 to April 61 and was in the S&S/Quarterdeck Mess when Solebay 'paid us an unannounced visit' in Sliema Creek!
