RN Aircraft Carriers In Focus

12th July 2009, 08:29
This is one of the IN FOCUS series published by Maritime Books, ISBN 979 1 904459 34 7 and it costs 14.99 The author is Commander David Hobbs MBE RN, a very experienced pilot, and his book tells the story of the aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy from 1918 to the present day (2008). This is done through an impressive collection of historic and contemporary photographs, many never published before, and each picture is accompanied by a potted biography of the ship. All the photos are in B & W except for the cover - this is a pity but no doubt due to the age of the sources plus production considerations. None the less many are quite dramatic or evocative and I particularly liked the end cover featuring HMS Ark Royal and a Tide Class RFA on artic weather trials. The final picture is a wishful forward scan to the proposed HMS Queen Elizabeth - I just wonder ? This book is a handy reference work for warship enthusiasts and will be of particular help to Members trying to identify older carriers in the Gallery.
