Looking for information about training of marine engineers in Dundee in 1930's

I am currently writing a biography of my Father who was a Marine Engineer 1930's - 1950's. He lived in Dundee, but worked for the Federal Steam navigation Company and then the NZSCo in the 1930's/ early 1940's before serving throughout the War in British vessels.

Is anyone able to advise me how he would have trained to be a marine engineer.

Does anyone have photos of the engine room in the Federal Navigation Steamship company's ship Somerset or -
that of the engine room in the Rangitata.

Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance.
