I am researching my husbands family tree and found out that my father-in-law came to england on the ss corfu. The date he arrived in england was on the 27/10/1957.
Does anyone know the departure date of ss corfu from Hong Kong in 1957.
Any information welcome.

Welcome aboard from East Yorkshire, Angela.
I'm sure that if the information is available someone in the crew will be able to find it.
Meanwhile find your way around and have a good voyage.

Hello Angela and welcome,

Inwards passenger lists are held at the National Archive, Kew in piece BT 26. The particular passenger list that you require is held in piece BT 26/1391/95 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-4378008&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CCORFU&accessmethod=0&Summary=True) this will give details of all passengers but unfortunately will not give the date of departure from Hong Kong. It would appear this file is not yet available for download but you can get it by taking the request estimate option on the link above.

Voyage records from the Guildhall Library, London.

If you contact the GuildHall Library by email and ask if they can give details of the voyage of ss CORFU from Hong Kong to London in Oct 57. I am sure they will give you the information in return for a small donation.
Contact details at the bottom of this link: Voyage Record Cards (http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/61788173-C6AA-4C1B-A751-453A99FBEC9B/0/pb_vrc.pdf)

Hello Angela,

I sailed on the Corfu as Bell Boy in 1960. The voyages were every nine weeks so there would be 5 or 6 departures in 1957, if your father arrived on the 27th of October he would have departed just over four weeks earlier

Angela.

From The Times "Movements of Liners" reports. Firstly, here's the trip before your father-in-law's:

The Times, Friday, Sep 20, 1957
CORFU, Ldn. for Hongkong, left Singapore 18.

Now, a little frustratingly, I couldn't find a report of CORFU leaving Hong Kong. The next report was it arriving Singapore:

The Times, Tuesday, Oct 01, 1957
CORFU, Hongong for Ldn., arrd. Singapore 30.

The Times, Friday, Oct 04, 1957
CORFU, Hongong for Ldn., left Singapore 2.

The Times, Friday, Oct 11, 1957
CORFU, for Ldn., left Bombay 10.

The Times, Friday, Oct 25, 1957
CORFU, Hongong for Ldn., psd. Gib. 23.

The Times, Saturday, Oct 26, 1957
CORFU, fm. Hongkong, due Ldn. 27.

Martin

I have a schedule from 1956 I think that may cover 1957 and will see if I can find it and post - realise this years later than the posting I'm replying to. Also have rather large model of Corfu and Ships Plans :-)
