The morning of April 15, 1953, lookout D.L. Davis, USS Mispillion, spotted a man afloat in the ocean. Subsequently Mispillion directed an at-sea search and rescue operation that recovered 14 survivors (and 27 bodies) from the Chinese Nationalist ship Lien Sheng, that had burned and sank on her maiden and last voyage from Kaohsiung, Formosa. Steaming to Kaohsiung aboard Mispillion, and under the care of her devoted crew, the Sheng’s survivors were reunited with their families, and Mispillion and crew were given a hero’s reception. The ship was awarded a beautiful silk banner, which reads:

“BRAVERY THROUGH RIGHTEOUSNESS an EXAMPLE TO ALL”

Farewell, Brave Ship.
