World War II opened inauspiciously for the Allies after the German
army invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, igniting the destructive 6-yr global conflict. Within four weeks, Poland was subjugated and divided between Germany and its then ally, the Soviet Union. For the next six months, a “phony war” played out in Europe, as little combat occurred on the western front while the belligerent nations frantically mobilized for war. But the brief lull was shattered on 9 April 1940, when the Germans invaded and quickly conquered Norway and Denmark. One month later, Nazi invasions of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, and France began. This blitzkrieg assault astounded the world with its startling success.
