As to rope work of any use today on modern ships, there are a few basic knots you may need to know bowline roundturn and two half hitches spring to mind. Also if you are a seaman real seaman you would want to be good at your job ready for any occurance .We could splice rope and wire and keep up with the new stuff coming on board.Today it's just a salary in our day it was a profession .
