General Steam Navigation Company/P&O House Flag

Hello everyone

I recently acquired this item and wondered if anyone would have more info?

There is writing on the side saying G.S.N.Co - so my assumption is that it is from the General Steam Navigation Company - perhaps off one of its steamers?

The only thing I can find similar are other house flags in museums.

So just a general request for any input or opinions!

Many Thanks!

Looks like "British India Steam Navigation Company".

Hi thanks for the reply.

What makes you say that?

As I said up the side of the flag you can make out the initials G.S.N.Co

In either case would this kind of flag have been flown on the ship
?

?It's more than likely the B.I.S.N. Co house flag. Google it and you will see the likeness.

Yeah certainly there are similarities - as in they use the St Partrick cross - but on their flags they have a v-cut out of the end?

The initials on the side wouldnt fit with BISN.Co though surely?

Did they have flags for the country of destination alongside the companies house flag? I assumed this would have been on a boat headed to Ireland as on the surface that is what this flag is?

Yes I agree - perhaps it is not a 'House Flag' but Im sure these ships would also fly country of destination flags?

Makes more sense it would be a flag from a GSN.Co (because of the initials) ship on its way to Ireland no?

That could be a good shout!

If I could find out the dimensions of code flags that might confirm it?
