Just wanted to mention the passing of Eli Woods who has died at the age of 91. One of the old Music Hall performers with his friend Jimmy James, a great team in their day.

Only Doddy of the old greats left now. There's no one else who can make me laugh. I'm not sure if ken Dodd is still treading the Stage these Days. I saw Him twice at Weymouth, didn't get out the Theatre until 0100

Doddy is still going strong http://www.kendoddshows.com/ Saw him a couple of years ago at Blackburn - after the second encore the theatre staff prevented any more about 12:30 am IIRC!!

Some years ago my Uncle saw him at Burnley Mechanics - the theatre manager threw the keys at him and said "I'm off, put them through my letterbox when you've finished!!" A true trouper - if you've never seen him go!!

The name didn't ring a bell with me - then I remembered "Our Eli".
He was a great stooge for Jimmy James. I can remember seeing him on stage when J.J. had to wait (what seemed to be several minutes) before he could get his next line in, so much laughter from the audience and "Our Eli" hadn't said a single word.

Eli was James Casey and was a nephew of Jack Casey aka Jimmy James....

Doddy once did a show on a short run...first night he finished at 2230, second night when we were there it was 2335 and his last night 0115! Good value.

He was indeed Ben and Ron. A master at timing it right, at one time the late Roy Castle was with them both to learn the art of comedy timing. My Regards to all Those who remember when comedy was not about which swear words you could get away with when performing.

It was Chic Murray and Maidie. Chic married Maidie Dickson in 1945, they were divorced in 1970.
As others have said - a great double act.

Greetings,

Eli Woods was the nephew of Jimmy James with whom he appeared in the famous "Box Sketch".
The third man in the trio was the late James Casey, Jimmy James son and Eli's cousin.

Have a look HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1o3blDVyY4) for the Box Sketch with James Casey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Casey_%28variety_artist%29) taking the lead, the late Roy Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Castle) playing what had been James Casey's part and of course Eli Woods.

He had a long and successful career based, actually, on doing very little. Good for him! "I'm not just a pretty face" was one of his lines. A bloke who could be funny just by existing.
On the other hand, surely one can praise a comedic talent from long ago without denigrating the comedians of today, many of whom can be just as funny?

Apolgies Scelerat but I'm afraid I can't agree with You on that statement. The old Guy's didn't have to swear with every other word to try and give You a laugh as they do today.
