Autumn 1968 at South Shields Nautical College. Navigating Apprentice colleagues from my course pose somewhere in Shields, probably near the Halls of residence around Westoe Road. If my memory is right, guy on left was Roger from RFA, two on extreme right were Huntings men, and nearly everybody else were BP Tankers. Mike Bowen with red crevat; Terry Maxted wears blue t shirt under his shirt; guy with camera around neck was called Charlie from Birmingham, another Terry beneath the broken window; Gareth looking to the right. Cannot recall the chap with the pipe.

I think that house used to be on the corner of Westoe village and Sunderland road and was pulled down.

No we didn't live there and why we chose to stand in front, no one knows now!! I remember that we lived in residential accommodation for the course about 2 - 3 months, two to a room. Captain Baxendale was the "warden".

I stayed at SSM&T for all my courses. First stay was in the halls of residence-- "Winterbottom Hall" rings a bell??

Thereafter, in a shared house at the end of a passageway from the college--- I seem to recall the name "Southgarth" if anyone can refresh the failing memory-- a big old Victorian house, I was up in some attic room--- unfortunately not at all like the romantic visions of an artist's garret,it was really pretty grim!

" I live in retirement now and through my window comes the sound of seagulls
And sets my mind remembering
The evening stars like memories sail far beyond the distant trees
Way out across the open seas
I hear them sing .........................
And sometime (I) think in all this world, the saddest thing to be
Old Admirals who feel the wind, and never put to sea "

Winterbottom Hall was the new Halls of Residence close to the college. Southgarth was next to Sunderland road in the Westoe precinct. It was falling to pieces when I stayed there 1979 / 80. The passageway you remember must be the one leading from Westoe cul de sac to the top of mile end road (by the Westoe pub). At that time the County pub was the place to be.
