Hi Emil.

Yes, that's why I posted. £126,000 a letter, what price a 'life'?

Irrespective of technical 'progress' I'm afraid my view is that it would have been better if 'she' had not been found and that all those poor souls who perished had been left to rest in eternal peace in their grave, deep down in the mighty North Atlantic Ocean.

What we have now is 21st century 'everything has a price'. How do you put a price on the likes of this piece of marine history? I couldn't, could you? This was, in simple terms, simply an auction 'lot' whereas it should be in a museum having been 'retrieved' from where it should have remained ~ again just my personal opinion.

Graham,
From what I read, while the author died following the sinking, his wife (who was travelling with him) survived and the letter remained with the family until it was put up for auction. The letter was not looted from a corpse or recovered from the bottom of the sea. It therefore has provenance which adds to it's value as a family heirloom rather than grave robbery loot!
Best Rgds.

Hi Dave,

Should have done my 'homework' before posting, shouldn't I ? Apologies for jumping to the wrong conclusions without first checking the facts. You are, of course, 100% correct in your assessment and conclusion.

Thanks for so 'diplomatically' ~ if I may use that word ~ putting me in my place.

Kindest to you and yours.

Graham

Thanks Graham. Glad to have been of help - Curiously, I had exactly the same first reaction when I saw the headline and that prompted me to read the accompanying story.

Best Rgds.

Hi Dave,

Pleased to hear my initial reaction was the same as yours. Ironically/coincidentally take a look at page 43 of this, today's UK paper.

Cheers, for now.
