Much appreciated and apologies for not thanking earlier!

Will 'have a go' later and see if I can post the reverse 'not at an angle'.

Exactly what I try to be too, Geoff but the jury is still 'out' on that.

Kindest you and yours.

I was given my brother's apprentice indenture papers from 1954 a while back. Interesting reading, and it set him on a career that would qualify him for steam and motor, and include deep sea, cross channel ferries, and the harbour tug (but my Dad was the Master and being a bit superstitious wouldn't have both of them in the crew so he was sent back to the ferries.) He was also in Lewes Prison for many years. NOT as an inmate, but in charge of the prison's steam powered heating system!

When they updated to gas heating, he had to retrain and get his CORGI qualifications for that too.

I wonder if he had any idea of all that back when my Dad signed those papers for him. Indeed, did any young man think about where that piece of paper would lead?

Hi 'MM' {Melody Man/M Ching Man}.

Can only speak for myself but to me 'signing the parchment' was a feeling of having become a 'man' ~ non M Ching ~ and about to enter a man's world. Came ashore for Master's, happened to meet a female of now 51 years standing who said "It's the sea or me". Speak now as a happily retired great grandfather but still get nostalgic when talking to old sea pals from 60 + years ago.
