Dimensions : Length (oa) 417 feet x Beam 54 feet
Machinery : 4 x M8cyl 381x457mm oil engines built by Mirrlees, Bickerton & Day Ltd. Connected to 2 electric motors each of 2400shp driving 2-screws
Subsequent owner and registration history
1969. Renamed C.S ALERT by The Post Office, London
1975: Port of registry changed to Southampton
1987: Registered owner BT (Marine) Ltd, London
1995:Sold to Ruby Enterprise Inc, Tortola BVI - managers A L Burbank (Shipbrokers) Ltd, Fort Lee NJ, USA Port of Registry Kingstown, St Vincent . Renamed AL
27/10/1995: beached at Alang for demolition by Priya Blue Industries.

The CS MERCURY alongside the purpose built but long gone cable terminal at berth 203 in the Port of Southampton container terminal, the CANBERRA can be seen in the distance over at berth 106 in the Western Docks.

My father was Chief Engineer on Alert until (I think) 1985 when he retired. I remember it in Glasgow when it was all white - looked great.
