Athel Line's 1955 Hawthorn Leslie, Hebburn, built molasses tanker ATHELSTANE is seen departing from Avonmouth fifty years ago today, on 26th April 1969 bound for a breaker's yard at Faslane on the River Clyde where she arrived on 1st May 1969.

Oh dear! I was an apprentice at Leslie's when she was built and now you tell me it's 50 years today when she departed on her last voyage to the breakers. I expect they will be coming to collect me next!

why scrap a tanker 14 years old .. especially molasses as not a severe cargo ?????

They carried at times maybe the reason early demise I was deck boy on Athelcrest 63, spent more time NUC.than steaming.
