Visited Plymouth a couple of days before she left for the breakers and took a boat trip up harbour. Wasn't sure she was still there until I saw her mast over the headland. So pleased to be able to see an iconic ship one last time.

In 1971 on CLEOPATRA, we deployed to the West Indies and USA as her ‘plane guard’. (REGENT and OLMEDA in support). I didn’t realise it at the time how exciting this duty was but now feel privileged to have been a part of her ‘life’.

TJ, that deployment would of been a good 'un', end of an era.
Apart from Cleo, were there any other escorts?
Nige

No Nige, just CLEO, ARK and the 2 RFAs. CLEOs 'runs ashore' where San Juan, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Isles (Virgin Gorda), Charleston South Carolina and Philadelphia. The ARK visited Florida and New York. Great run. I remember in Philadelphia a lot of us had run out of 'beer coupons' so we went and 'donated' blood. We got US$5 for our troubles which was quite a bit in 1971.
