Clan Line's 1947 Greenock built CLAN MACLENNAN is seen passing Portishead, inbound for Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago, on 30th April 1969.

CLAN MACLENNAN finally arrived at Shanghai on 16th September 1971 for breaking although it is possible that the Chinese continued to trade the vessel locally for a time.

Some of this class of vessel were still in service when I started my career in 1973, this one is a steam ship if I am not mistaken, it was only the motor ships that survived beyond 1973, I believe. Visited a couple when we were in port together, didn't have the good fortune(?) to actually sail on one. They were very basic, even after a bit of a spruce up in the 70's. I remember being in Beira, on Clan Graham I think, when one of these was berthing astern of us and toppled a shore side crane! Think it was the "old man's" first trip if I remember rightly.

A stem ship can almost always be recognised by the top half of the rear main mast being painted black. We always joked that they did it because it would end up that colour eventually. Even among "oily rags" there was stem v motor rivalry. As a 'lecky, I remained impartial.

Are you, as of today, a May Bee Bee Norman? Should this apply you have two options, join Theresa and ex'it' stage left, right or whatever and whenever or pop up here from 'D' and join me in a chorus of 'Maybe(be) it's because I'm a Londoner.
