HERZOG or KÖNIG, both of 1896, Reiherstiegwerft, Hamburg and Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, respectively?

By a process of elimination (dates, grt, and photos on line) I got it down to 4 possibles (Gouverner, Herzog, Kaiser and Konig) Gouverner and Kaiser c 3000grt whereas this ship looks larger (Herzog and Konig c 4,900/4,800 grt) So I would go along with your ID, Joachim.
Regards.

PS Gijsha already posted photos of these two on S.N. (Which I missed !) Presence of two boats forward on boat deck suggests "Konig"?

I was comparing the foto with a scetch in the book "Die Schiffe der Deutschen Afrika-Linien" by Krüger-Kopiske which seems to me to be very reliable. It shows three boats alongside the funnel and if you look at the enlarged foto you can see there is another boat there, in chocks. So I tend towards HERZOG, looking at the other fotos Gijsha posted, which you found and which I had not seen before either, eddyw. But I doubt that that is really conclusive, boats being easy to add or to land. So I think one could settle on "KÖNIG-class", don't you agree?

Just compare the funnels (as I mentioned in eddyw`s 2nd link) and find out that she is KÖNIG.

Hi Joachim. I think you might be right about the third boat. Enlarging the image of "Konig" at Vlissingen reveals the tops of two radial davits at the after end of the boat deck, starboard side. Bootsman refers to funnels but I'm not sure I can see much difference. However "Herzog" appears to have a prominent bell mouthed vent abaft her funnel which doesn't feature on the picture of "Konig" or on the above photo. As you say none of this is conclusive without more photos for comparison. Definitely "Konig" or "Herzog" however. They seem to be the only Woermann ships with open promenades along the upper deck. Regards

Thanks everyone, shall name the photo KÖNIG or HERZOG and move to passenger ships category.
