I know that one ought to be very excited that Saga is poised to take delivery of this, their first ever new ship and that they have another identical sister presently under construction. Until now Saga has always relied on second-hand ships, really very lovely ones; Saga Rose ex Sagafjord, Saga Ruby ex Vistafjord and Saga Sapphire ex Europa along with an earlier Spirit of Discovery ex Berlin and Saga Pearl II ex Astoria.
I've sailed on the Rose, Ruby and Sapphire and loved each of them. It's likely that I may well like the 'on-board product' (should I ever get around to trying it) on this new Spirit of Discovery and her sister but I doubt I'll be spending too much time bothering to photograph these ships in some exciting or exotic location - I cannot work up an atom of excitement over them. Quite simply they look so boring and unremarkable.

Clive

Every year I have my personal ''ship of the year award'' based on newbuild cruise ships entering service during that year and I have to say that the Spirit of Discovery had already won that award in advance of her entering service.

Personally I am excited about the Spirit of Discovery and I very much like her externally and from what I have seen so far her interiors are magnificent and in my opinion she absolutely deserves my ''ship of the year award''.

Compared to the monotonous looking newbuilds from the likes of Celebrity Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silverseas Cruises I find the looks of the Spirit of Discovery very modern and very elegant and I very much look forward to seeing her in Southampton when she arrives at the port for the first time later in 2019.

But then of course you don't really like modern day cruise ships do you Clive you can't deny it after many year's here on SN condemning nearly every newbuild usually with similar comments and just in case no one is aware of your dislikes you post similar comments on shipspotting.com 😴

We all cherish the likes of the former Andes, Canberra, Caronia, France, Leonardo da Vinci, Oceanic, Queen Elizabeth, Sagafjord, Vistafjord, Windsor Castle, etc, etc, but the likes of those are long gone.

We have to adjust our likes to the modern day and I give a huge thumbs up to Saga Cruises brand new Spirit of Discovery. Regardless of the nostalgia concerning the former NAL liners and Saga Sapphire ''former Europa'' the entry into service of the Spirit of Discovery is a huge milestone in the 25 year history of Saga Cruises and sees the company moving forward in the right direction with two brand new ships in the fleet by 2020.

Summarising your comment, Sean, we must all move with the 'Times' when seeking the 'Sun' and accept the fact the 'News of the World' is no longer in the hands of our 'Independent' 'Guardian(s)'. One must look in the 'Mirror' 'Daily, Express' one's thoughts as a similar 'Mail' etc. etc

Thanks for your comments Sean. I have made no attempt to deny my usual disappointment regarding the external appearance of the new generation of cruise ships. However, I think that you might perhaps have missed my comment (on Shipspotting.com) on the new ship, Hondius.

I think the design is 'safe'. Not quite what we wanted, but today's ships are not what they were. (Understated.)

I think the new Saga ships will be winners. When passengers start thinking that these new ships are not 6,000 pax monsters and there will be less than 999 they will start paying attention.
