Think it was December 63 that she caught fire and sank north of Madeira

Yes 63 Buries Marks MONTCALM was one of the first on the scene. If my old memory is correct she also went on fire the following year and went down. I think on the Nth Atlantic.

Keith

The LAKONIA caught on fire off the island of Madiera on the evening of the 23 December 1963, she sank the following day after the fire had subsided with salvage tugs towing her towards Gibraltar. Out of a total compliment of 1,022 passengers and crew onboard there were 128 fatalities.

The company and the crew were highly criticised at the time for the mishandling of the ships evacuation and the safety procedures.

Wikipedia has a very comprehensive page dedicated to the LAKONIA which may be of interest to those reading this!

There is also full coverage in SN Directories

https://www.shipsnostalgia.com/guide...sters_-_Part_2

Lakonia should never been allowed to sail, but she was passed by a British Ministry of Transport inspection on the day before her last departure.

Sadly every photo originally posted in the SN Directory have disappeared in recent changes.

I still have the LIFE magazine issue with a photo of the blazing 'Lakonia' on the cover. The disaster made a huge impression on me at the age of 14.
