Danish passenger/cargo ship built in 1905 by B&W, Copenhagen, yard number 240. Sailing ship with auxiliary steam engine owned by Gr÷nlands Styreise, Copenhagen. In 1908/1909 the ship used by Frederick Albert Cook in his attempt to reach the North Pole.

Location of the photo: Augmagsalite Sea on the east coast of Greenland. Problem: I cannot trace such a name on any map.

The HANS EGEDE was torpedoed on 6th March 1942 by U-587 with the loss of about 100 lives.

The location is probably Angmagssalik, sometimes also spelled Ammassalik. Nowadays, however, this place is named Tasiilaq.

Tonnage : grt / nrt / tdw - 900 / 506 / 470 + 120.
Machinery : Triple Exp.Steam Engine - 550 ihp.

1942 Torpdoed by German U-587 in pos : 16.00N / 55.40W.Loos of 23 lives.

From 1905-1940 in regular service Copenhagen - Greenland with passengers and cargo (typically 5 voyages per year).
After the German occupation of Denmark in April 1940, she entered service Greenland - USA (Philadelphia or New York) with cryolite.
06.03.1942: Torpedoed by German submarine on voyage Greenland to USA. The loss of lives was 20.
