This was originally built in 1963 as American Mail Lines' cargo liner "Canada Mail". In 1978 she was converted into a hydrographic survey ship to replace the USNS Michelson, a converted Victory Ship, which had been taken out of service in 1975. USNS Hess was retired in 1992 and finally scrapped in 2011. These ships were not very conspicuous because they spent most of their time at work far out at sea and only came into port for fuel and stores about once a month.
